Manic Munich Monday: Plastic

20 09 2010

Mondays need a theme. My friend K, inspired by The Bangles (and really who isn’t), suggested Manic Mondays.

So Mondays can be devoted to things about Munich that drive me crazy. The problem is Munich is such a pleasant place to live that there is really very little about the city that drives me crazy. I pride myself, however, on being able to complain about everything. Therefore I WILL find things that drive me crazy about Munich.

A rare sunny day in Munich as evidenced by my wearing of sunglasses while taking this photo

This is the sign outside my favorite restaurant. I understand the first two. No one wants burning sticks or people playing monopoly in a restaurant. But seriously no Visa! WTM?! (translation: what the monkey?!) This place is great, but not that cheap. If I want to go into debt by eating here every night I should be allowed.

And it is not just my favorite restaurant. Credit cards are not accepted almost everywhere. And no it is not simply a European thing (Austria, Italy, and France accept credit much more often). It is a German thing. Not only does this means no credit cards, it also means no American debit cards. Many places take EC cards, the ones with the chip, but that means I must have money in my German account (something which rarely happens).

So there, I found something to complain about. It makes me miss home. After all paying with credit cards and getting into massive debt is, to quote a wise muppet, “The American Way!”

Note amazing computer skills. It totally looks like he is holding it.
